Pakistan’s cricket selectors have initiated a significant overhaul of the T20 team, opting to replace prominent players Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan for the upcoming five-match series against New Zealand, which is set to commence on March 16. Stepping into the leadership role is Salman Ali Agha, who will captain the squad, with the experienced all-rounder Shadab Khan serving as vice-captain. Agha’s previous leadership experience includes a successful T20 series where he guided Pakistan to a 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe late last year.
Despite the changes in the T20 format, Mohammad Rizwan has maintained his position as the captain of the One Day International (ODI) team, which will also face New Zealand in three matches starting on March 29. Babar Azam, meanwhile, has been retained in the ODI squad, although several adjustments have been made following Pakistan’s early exit from the recently concluded Champions Trophy. This exit was marked by defeats to New Zealand and India, and Pakistan’s subsequent placement in fourth position in its group after a match against Bangladesh was washed out.
While fast bowlers Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi will be part of the T20 team, they have not been included in the ODI lineup. The selectors have made bold moves, including the removal of top-order batsmen Kamran Ghulam and Saud Shakeel. Abdullah Shafique, who was sidelined during the Champions Trophy due to a form slump in South Africa, has been reappointed to the squad.
The decision-making body aims to encourage a more aggressive style of play in T20 cricket, a format currently characterized by high scores often exceeding 200 runs. Interim head coach Aaqib Javed emphasized the need for “fearless” cricket and highlighted the importance of batters who can effectively leverage the initial six overs of batting powerplay.
In addition to established players, the T20 squad introduces fresh talent, including uncapped players Abdul Samad, Hasan Nawaz, and fast bowler Mohammad Ali. Samad’s recent domestic performance includes scoring 115 runs at a remarkable strike rate, while Nawaz emerged as a strong contender in the domestic T20 Champions Cup, finishing second in total runs.
As Pakistan cricket navigates through these changes with the future in mind, the upcoming series against New Zealand will be pivotal for testing the effectiveness of this new direction.
