Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has announced the difficult decision to suspend its medical operations in the Zamzam camp, located in Sudan’s North Darfur region. This decision comes amidst a significant increase in violent attacks, rendering the camp too dangerous for continued humanitarian assistance.
In a statement released on Monday, MSF highlighted the challenges posed by escalating conflict within and around Zamzam camp, which is home to approximately half a million people displaced by Sudan’s ongoing civil war, now in its 22nd month. The humanitarian group, known for its commitment to providing essential medical care in crises, emphasized that the precarious security situation has made it “impossible to continue providing medical assistance.”
MSF has been one of the few organizations actively delivering care in Zamzam, where health workers have been vital in treating individuals injured during clashes, including those harmed by attacks from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). They have also played a crucial role in addressing the severe malnutrition affecting thousands of children in the camp.
Yahya Kalilah, MSF’s country director in Sudan, expressed the heart-wrenching nature of the decision to halt operations. He cited significant challenges, including the proximity of ongoing violence, difficulties in accessing supplies, and uncertainties regarding safe routes for both MSF personnel and civilians wishing to exit the camp.
The conflict in Sudan erupted in April 2023, primarily involving fighting between the RSF and the Sudanese military. This devastating conflict has resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of lives, while approximately 14 million people have been displaced, further exacerbating an extensive humanitarian crisis across the nation. In a recent escalation, the RSF initiated a storming of the Zamzam camp, leading to fierce clashes and forcing around 10,000 families to flee as reported by the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Despite the challenging landscape, MSF managed to provide treatment for numerous gunshot and shrapnel wounds through its field hospital this month; however, a lack of critical medical supplies has resulted in tragic fatalities, particularly among vulnerable children. Alarmingly, MSF ambulances have also been targeted in recent months, increasing risks for those providing much-needed care.
In light of the deteriorating situation, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned of a potential “further escalation” in the conflict following the RSF’s announcement to form a parallel government. This announcement has raised concerns about further fragmentation within Sudan. Despite this, analysts suggest that the RSF may focus their operations in the western region of Darfur, signaling a complex and evolving crisis.
