Dr. Mahmoud Abu Nujaila’s poignant final words, inscribed on a whiteboard at al-Awda Hospital in Jabalia refugee camp on October 20, 2023, serve as a testament to the unyielding spirit of medical providers in Gaza. His call to remember echoed as a heartfelt dedication to resilience amidst turmoil. Tragically, a month later, Dr. Nujaila lost his life along with two colleagues—Dr. Ahmad Al Sahar and Dr. Ziad Al-Tatari—due to an Israeli airstrike that targeted the very institution designed to preserve life.

The medical landscape in Gaza, once a beacon of hope and care, has been decimated, leaving its dedicated healthcare professionals vulnerable and exposed. In an alarming development, more than 1,000 medical workers have already lost their lives, while over 300 have been forcibly disappeared. Al-Shifa Hospital, which had previously served as a critical care provider and refuge, faced extensive attacks, culminating in destruction that extended beyond its physical structure, instigating a crisis of care.

Despite these overwhelming challenges, the healthcare professionals in Gaza continue to embody a fierce dedication to their vocation. Their ongoing sacrifices illuminate a deep commitment to serve, even in the face of existential threats. Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, the head of Kamal Adwan Hospital, and several others represent a cadre of inspiring figures, steadfast in their resolve to provide medical assistance to a population in dire need.

Among those committed medical professionals is Dr. Mariam Salama Abu Helow, a pediatrician at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. Her perseverance resonates deeply, as she grapples with the harrowing impact of the ongoing conflict on vulnerable children—wounded, orphaned, and malnourished.

In a year where many might choose self-preservation, the ambition of medical students in Gaza continues to shine bright. Even amid street battles and bombardments, they are steadfast in their commitment, with dedicated students refusing to leave. The dedication to continue their education, despite the destruction of six universities, signifies an unwavering resolution among the youth. Just recently, 80 medical students from Al-Azhar University emerged as graduates ready to embark on their journey in healthcare.

The narrative of destruction is carried hand in hand with aspirations for the future. Dr. Abu Nujaila’s memory demonstrates the importance of honoring those lost while simultaneously steering toward a brighter future. The journey may be fraught with challenges, yet the spirit of Gaza’s healthcare professionals remains indomitable. As they strive to rebuild their medical system and serve their communities, they exemplify the resilience and hope of a people united in the face of adversity.
