Greece’s parliament has voted to elect Constantine Tassoulas as the new president, a key ally of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Despite significant public outcry following a tragic train accident in 2023, Tassoulas garnered the support of 160 lawmakers in a vote held in the 300-seat parliament. He will replace Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Greece’s first female president, whose term is set to conclude in March.
Tassoulas was chosen for his extensive political experience and what Mitsotakis described as his “unifying spirit.” However, this decision has sparked protests outside the parliament, as many demonstrators express dissatisfaction over perceived inadequacies in the investigation into the February 2023 rail disaster. The unfortunate incident resulted in the loss of 57 lives and involved a collision between a freight train and a passenger train carrying many students near Larissa.
The aftermath of the disaster ignited nationwide demonstrations, with citizens calling for accountability and improvements to the country’s railway safety standards. Justice for the victims remains a critical concern, and a judicial inquiry is still ongoing. Under Greek legislation, parliament is the entity responsible for investigating political accountability, making the public’s cries for justice all the more pressing.
Amid these challenges, there is a growing attention to the technical aspects of the crash. Investigations carried out by experts funded by the victims’ families have implied the need for more clarity regarding the origins of the catastrophic fireball produced during the collision. Preliminary conclusions dismiss the possibility that the fire was ignited by electricity cables or oils from the passenger train, steering focus instead towards the cargo of the freight train involved in the tragedy.
While the centre-right government led by Mitsotakis stands firm against allegations of negligence, opposition parties from the centre-left and left have offered alternative candidates and have withheld support for Tassoulas, who has a political career spanning over two decades. In accepting his presidential nomination, Tassoulas characterized it as a “paramount honour and responsibility,” reflecting his commitment to navigating Greece through this tumultuous period.
As Greece seeks to restore public confidence in its railway system and achieve a measure of justice for the victims, the appointment of Tassoulas presents both an opportunity and a challenge for the government. Moving forward, it will be crucial for the new leadership to address the underlying issues that led to the tragedy while fostering a sense of unity within the nation.
