Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte has been impeached by the lower house of Congress, a development that underscores the intricate dynamics of the nation’s political landscape. The impeachment vote, which transpired on Wednesday, saw considerable support from lawmakers aligned with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The decision follows a series of allegations against Duterte, which range from misuse of public funds to involvement in plots against President Marcos.

Despite these accusations, Duterte has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, framing the impeachment move as a politically motivated attack. “Having been filed by more than one-third of the membership of the House of Representatives, or a total of 215 [out of 306] members, the motion is approved,” declared House Speaker Martin Romualdez during the session in which the vote was cast.

With the articles of impeachment now forwarded to the Senate, the decision regarding Duterte’s political future rests with the 24 senators, two-thirds of whom are required to vote for her impeachment in order for her to be removed from office. Although the timeline for a trial has not been established, Duterte will continue her duties as vice president while the proceedings unfold.

This impeachment marks a significant moment in Philippine political history, as Duterte becomes the fourth high-ranking official to face such a process, joining the ranks of former President Joseph Estrada among others. The Philippine political system allows for impeachment based on various grounds, including treason, bribery, corruption, and betrayal of public trust.

The timing of the House vote is noteworthy, as it arrives just days ahead of the midterm election campaign, which is anticipated to play a critical role in shaping the political landscape leading up to the 2028 presidential race. In previous statements, President Marcos expressed his concerns about the impeachment effort, describing the situation as a “storm in a teacup” that distracts legislators from their essential responsibilities. However, his administration signaled a hands-off approach regarding the impeachment complaints.

The relationship between Duterte and Marcos, once seen as a strong partnership following their electoral victory in 2022, has deteriorated into a public feud with both parties engaging in a back-and-forth exchange of accusations. Notably, Duterte has publicly declared her intentions to take drastic measures should her life be threatened, while also alleging corruption and authoritarian tendencies among Marcos and his inner circle.

As this political drama continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how these developments will impact the upcoming elections and the broader governance of the Philippines.
