Jordan’s King Abdullah II has reaffirmed the nation’s strength and unity in the wake of a terrorist attack on a church in Karak, which resulted in nine fatalities and many injuries. During the opening of a new parliamentary session in Amman, King Abdullah characterized the violence as a challenge from “the treacherous hand of terrorism” aimed at testing the resilience of Jordan and its citizens. He emphasized that the attackers do not represent Jordanian values, stating firmly, “They are not of us; there is no place for them among us, not today and not tomorrow.” This declaration was made in honor of the victims, with their relatives present as lawmakers observed a moment of silence.

Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Jarrar, reporting from the capital, conveyed that King Abdullah outlined a robust response to terrorism and extremism, rooted in national unity and public awareness. The King expressed confidence in the capabilities of the Jordanian army and security services, which are poised to respond decisively to any threats. He asserted the importance of facing these challenges not only with military strength but also through a cohesive national front.

The King turned attention to regional dynamics, specifically the dangers posed by Israeli expansionism, which he identified as the most significant threat to the Middle East’s security and future stability. Expressing deep concern over the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the persistent violence in the West Bank and Jerusalem, Abdullah called for urgent action and solidarity.

Water security remains a pressing issue for Jordan, and the King vowed to protect the nation’s scarce water resources from external risks, stating, “We will not allow the thirst of Jordanians to be held hostage by any party.” This statement reflects growing apprehensions about how Israeli projects could impact Jordan’s water supply.

As a key ally of the United States, Jordan signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, and a significant portion of its population comprises individuals of Palestinian ancestry. In addressing lawmakers, King Abdullah emphasized the importance of debate in parliament, framing differences of opinion as strengths that contribute to the national interest, as long as they align with the collective goals of the country. He urged them to focus on enhancing the living conditions of all Jordanians and reminded them that the law applies equally to all, regardless of status or influence.
