One survivor, Nasser al-Burqan, recounted how one of the attackers pointed a handgun at him from close range. Tarek Ammarin, a visitor to a relative who was wounded, characterized the incident as “a massacre in every sense of the word.” Bahjat al-Rushda, the mayor of Shihan village in Karak, condemned the attack as “wicked,” expressing hope that protective measures will maintain national safety.

According to reports from Jordan’s Petra news agency, the attack claimed the lives of eight individuals—seven at the scene and another who later succumbed to her injuries. Of the approximately 40 wounded, 27 remained hospitalized, with one person in critical condition following surgery.

While the identities of the attackers have yet to be verified, Ministry of Interior officials have described them as members of a group of “extremists” disconnected from humanity. Although video footage of the incident has circulated, it has not yielded clear leads regarding the attackers’ affiliations.

Prime Minister Jafar Hassan characterized the assault as a product of “terrorist ideology and blind extremism,” offering no additional details on the attackers’ identities or plans. The motive for the attack is still shrouded in uncertainty.

Karak governorate, located about 120 kilometers (75 miles) south of Amman, is home to a significant population of Christians, who comprise a vital part of Jordan’s diverse society, numbering around 300,000 in a country of 11.5 million. Observers like Taylor Luck, senior Middle East correspondent at the Christian Science Monitor, have noted that the Christian community prides itself on long-standing interfaith solidarity and coexistence. They believe this dark moment may ultimately strengthen communal bonds.

Jordan’s rich tapestry of cultural and historical sites also attracts tourists from around the globe, showcasing the kingdom as a beacon of religious tolerance in the region. Following the attack, numerous countries, including Azerbaijan, Iraq, Poland, Palestine, and Qatar, quickly expressed solidarity with Jordan and condemned the violence. Ahmed al-Tayeb, the grand imam of Al-Azhar in Cairo, reiterated this sentiment, calling the shooting a heinous act that contradicts the core teachings of the Abrahamic faiths.

In response to the atrocity, the Jordanian Prime Minister declared three days of mourning, during which flags were lowered to half-mast over government and public buildings, as a nation united in grief seeks solace in solidarity and strength. Attention will now turn to bolster security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, reinforcing Jordan’s commitment to maintaining peace and harmony among all its citizens.
