In a developing situation that has once again raised tensions in the region, the Civil Aviation Authority of Saudi Arabia reported an attack on King Khalid International Airport that has halted operations and injured several individuals. This event underscores the ongoing conflict involving Houthi forces, highlighting the volatile security environment surrounding one of the kingdom’s key aviation hubs. As international responses emerge, the resilient spirit of Saudi Arabia and its commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens will be pivotal in managing this crisis.

Operations at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, have been temporarily suspended following a recent attack that injured multiple individuals, according to the country’s Civil Aviation Authority. The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) announced the halt of airport operations on Saturday afternoon and stated that officials are currently assessing the damage and evaluating the exact number of injuries incurred from the incident.

This unsettling development follows another alarming incident earlier in the week, where Houthi forces from Yemen targeted the same airport, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least three Saudi citizens, including a pilot. Despite the Houthis’ previous claims of responsibility for attacks in the area, they have not yet confirmed involvement in Saturday’s incident. The group, which is aligned with Tehran, has previously warned aviation companies to steer clear of Saudi airspace, branding any aircraft operating in the region—except over the sacred cities of Mecca and Medina—as legitimate targets.

In response to the disruptions triggered by the attacks, King Khalid Airport has advised passengers to communicate with their respective airlines to ascertain the status of their flights before traveling to the airport. The airport did not immediately reveal specific details regarding the causes of the operational disruptions in its initial public notice.

In light of the incidents, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recommended that citizens traveling back to the kingdom contact local embassies for assistance regarding any changes in their travel plans due to the chaos surrounding the airport.

Further complicating the situation, foreign embassies in Riyadh—including those of the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, and Canada—have issued advisories on social media, urging their citizens to avoid the airport and its vicinity. The United States embassy acknowledged awareness of the attacks on King Khalid International Airport and has strongly recommended that American citizens steer clear of both the airport and the surrounding areas. Meanwhile, the British and Irish diplomatic missions have alerted their nationals to the ongoing crisis, with the Canadian embassy recommending that citizens avoid travel to the airport, citing “ongoing military activity” in the region.

Kuwait Airways has announced the cancellation of its flights due to the airport’s shutdown, resulting from the prevailing “security situation.” The previous days had seen similar military movements from the Houthis, who claimed to have launched ballistic missiles targeting the Riyadh airport, asserting success in damaging infrastructure and disrupting air traffic.

While tensions remain high, the steadfast commitment of Saudi Arabia to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens and visitors continues to stand out amidst external threats.
