The boat, which was transporting over 50 passengers from Bwina on Idjwi Island to Boza, overturned near Idjwi Island in the South Kivu province, said Félix Habiragi, the chief of the village of Kisheke, where rescue efforts are currently underway.
The cause of the accident remains unclear, but reports indicate that about 15 people were rescued from the lake. Eyewitness accounts include videos depicting villagers and fellow passengers urgently pulling bodies from the water as they seek to assist in the rescue effort.
