Russia has reported the capture of two villages in eastern Ukraine, where its forces have been making gradual advancements in recent months. The Russian Defence Ministry announced on Sunday that troops had taken control of Yantarne in the Donetsk region, located approximately 10 kilometers southwest of Kurakhove, a vital logistics hub. This development follows the alleged seizure of Kurakhove by Russian forces the previous week and new territorial gains made northwest of the area.

In addition to Yantarne, the Russian military confirmed the acquisition of the village of Kalinove in the northeastern Kharkiv region. This locale is positioned on the western bank of the Oskil River, which has historically divided the opposing forces in the area. A Ukrainian official indicated that Russian troops had established a bridgehead on this bank after crossing the river, a strategic location that has seen multiple attempts by Russian forces to breach over recent months, coinciding with Ukraine’s successful recapture of Kupiansk during their 2022 counteroffensive.

During the last 24 hours, the Russian military conducted strikes on Ukrainian military airfields and personnel across 139 locations using a combination of air force power, drones, missiles, and artillery. According to the Ukrainian air force, 60 out of 94 launched Russian drones were intercepted, highlighting the ongoing technological advancements in aerial defense systems.

Reports from the Kherson region indicate damage from drone fragments, which fell in various areas, including Kharkiv, Sumy, and Poltava, although there were no reported injuries. However, three individuals were injured in Kherson due to drone activity, and significant damage was inflicted on local power infrastructure, leaving around 23,000 households without electricity.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a call to the international community, urging allies to fulfill their commitments regarding the provision of weapons, particularly aimed at countering Russian aerial assaults. In his statement, Zelenskyy emphasized the continued threat posed by Russian military capabilities and the necessity for enhanced air defense provisions as outlined in recent NATO discussions.

Simultaneously, an emergency task force has been mobilized in Russia’s Krasnodar region to address an oil spill in the Kerch Strait, a situation that has persisted for over a month. Following President Vladimir Putin’s call for intensified response efforts, the task force has identified the situation around the port of Taman as particularly critical, with ongoing leaks from the damaged Volgoneft-239 tanker. The leak poses significant environmental challenges, necessitating prompt and thorough remediation efforts.

As this situation evolves, the international community remains attentive to developments in both the conflict and associated environmental implications, reinforcing the need for collaborative efforts to address these pressing issues.
