In a bold move that underscores his commitment to social justice, rapper Macklemore has pledged to donate the entirety of his million earnings from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour to organizations supporting Palestinians after his recent removal from the tour for expressing solidarity with their plight. This decision not only reinforces the power of artists to use their platforms for advocacy but also highlights the growing conversation around human rights, regardless of the geopolitical complexities involved.

Diminishing his own involvement in the controversy, Macklemore, whose real name is Ben Haggerty, took to Instagram on Wednesday to announce that he would donate his entire earnings from the Loop Tour, a sum totaling million. The funds are set to support six different organizations that provide direct assistance to Palestinians. His announcement followed a tumultuous week in which he was removed from the tour after he voiced his support for Palestinians during concerts, including performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

In what seems to be an escalating response to current events, Macklemore also called on pro-Israel billionaire Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, to match his donation. This request comes after Kraft stated that Macklemore’s performance was barred from Gillette Stadium due to what he claimed was the rapper’s history of “antisemitic rhetoric and imagery.” Macklemore, however, emphasizes a message of empathy and solidarity, noting, “Whatever we disagree about, perhaps we can agree on this: Palestinian lives are worth protecting.”

As the fallout from his removal intensifies, the situation has drawn support for Macklemore from fellow artists. Many supporting acts for Sheeran’s upcoming U.S. Loop Tour have now opted to withdraw in solidarity with the rapper, with some articulating this decision in the context of Ireland’s own historical struggles with occupation.

Despite the controversy, Sheeran has clarified that the ultimate decision to remove Macklemore was made not by him, but by the tour promoter. In a subsequent statement, Kraft asserted that his opposition to Macklemore was not intended to downplay Palestinian suffering but was rather a stance regarding the complexities of the Israel-Palestine conflict. He remarked, “Advocacy should not come at the expense of the Jewish community or obscure the responsibility of Hamas.”

Macklemore’s donation aims to redirect the narrative away from himself and the ongoing tour drama, reiterating that the real focus should be on the need for freedom, dignity, and safety for Palestinians in their homeland. He described his financial contribution as a relatively low-risk form of solidarity, acknowledging that genuine support involves greater personal stakes.

As he concluded his message, Macklemore urged the public to remain vigilant and engaged, stating that as the news cycle eventually shifts away, it is vital to keep the focus on the Palestinian cause. “When the news cycle moves on, which it will, don’t move with it,” he urged. “Free Palestine.”
