In a recent announcement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will miss the two-Test series against Sri Lanka due to a persistent knee injury. The 32-year-old, who holds the title of the world’s top-ranked Test bowler, sustained this injury while fielding during a one-day international against England in Cardiff last month. Initially hopeful of recovering in time, Bumrah had been included in the squad under the condition of passing a final fitness test, but continued discomfort has led to his withdrawal.
To fill the gap left by Bumrah, the BCCI has named uncapped fast bowler Auqib Nabi as his replacement. Nabi, 29, hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, has earned his debut call-up to the senior team after an impressive showing in domestic cricket, where he accumulated 104 wickets over the last two Ranji Trophy seasons, including 60 wickets in the 2025-26 season. His contributions helped his domestic team secure their first title, and he also showcased his talent during India A’s recent tour of Sri Lanka, where he claimed six wickets in two first-class matches.
This call-up is especially noteworthy as Nabi becomes the first cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to reach the senior Test team, representing a significant milestone for the region’s cricketing community. The BCCI is also monitoring the fitness of batter Sai Sudharsan, whose participation remains uncertain.
The two-Test series against Sri Lanka is set to commence in Galle on August 15, followed by the second match in Colombo starting August 23. With Bumrah’s absence, the Indian team’s strategy may need to adapt, potentially allowing players like Nabi to demonstrate their capabilities on an international stage.
