Three additional schoolchildren have succumbed to injuries sustained in a bus crash in eastern Uganda, increasing the death toll to 23 children and one adult, according to police reports. The tragic incident occurred when a bus transporting students and teachers from King David Junior School in Kampala was returning from a trip to Sipi Falls. The accident took place on Thursday night as the bus overturned after the driver lost control at Chekwatit village in the Kapchorwa district, colliding with a large stone.
Among the deceased, the identity of six children remains unknown, while the adult victim is believed to be the school’s founder and head. Authorities reported that numerous injured children were swiftly transported to hospitals, with 23 of them currently receiving treatment at Kapchorwa General Hospital. Remarkably, three other vehicles from the same excursion completed the journey safely, highlighting the randomness of this tragic occurrence.
In the wake of this disaster, Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports has implemented an immediate nationwide suspension of school trips pending a thorough investigation into recent accidents involving schoolchildren. To enhance safety, police announced new measures, including providing escorts for the safe transportation of learners to their schools.
Uganda is known for having one of the poorest road safety records globally, with traffic accidents frequently attributed to inadequate vehicle maintenance and poorly constructed roads, combined with reckless driving practices. Earlier this month, a collision between a bus and a truck resulted in 14 fatalities in northern Uganda. Additionally, in October, a separate crash involving two buses on a major highway led to the loss of at least 46 lives.
