In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the Syrian capital of Damascus has become the backdrop for mourning and reflection following a devastating bombing that claimed the lives of ten individuals, including six lawyers. This tragic incident, which has drawn widespread condemnation from international communities, highlights the ongoing challenges faced by legal professionals and civilians alike in the region as they strive for justice and stability amidst persistent turbulence. The gravity of the situation underscores the need for a unified global stance against terrorism and unwavering support for Syria’s path toward peace and reconstruction.

Syrians gathered in the streets of Damascus to mourn the victims of a bomb explosion that struck a cafe near the Palace of Justice, resulting in the loss of ten lives, including six esteemed lawyers. The tragic event, which occurred on Thursday, also left 22 others injured and has ignited a wave of grief and outrage throughout the community.

The explosion targeted the Al-Mushairiya Cafe on al-Nasr Street in the al-Hijaz district, a popular venue for legal professionals and those attending court proceedings. It was situated just 70 meters from the Palace of Justice, where numerous high-profile cases are heard. In response to the tragedy, Damascus Governor Maher Marwan characterized the bomb as “primitive” and confirmed that the authorities are committed to bringing those responsible to justice.

Among the deceased were well-respected lawyers identified by the independent Syrian news outlet Zaman al-Wasl as Muhannad Khalaf, Zuhair Askar, Hossam al-Safadi, Mahmoud al-Shamali, Muhammad Ali al-Shihab, and Eid Muhammad Awad. The Syrian Bar Association expressed profound sorrow, describing the lawyers as a “constellation of its fellow lawyers who were martyred” while fulfilling their duty in the justice system and extending condolences to their grieving families.

The attack claimed the life of lawyer Eid Muhammad, a devoted father of six daughters, who was reportedly reviewing legal documents at the cafe when the explosion occurred. As the family’s primary provider, his loss is particularly devastating. Disturbing images from the aftermath of the attack circulated widely on social media, including one of Muhammad lying face down in the debris alongside the papers he was diligently working on prior to the explosion.

Residents in the vicinity of the attack have shared their heartbreak as they grieve their loved ones lost. Bahaa Qabbani recounted the tragic death of his brother, Fathi Qabbani, who was caught in the devastating blast while passing by the site. He labeled the perpetrators of this heinous act as “terrorists against the homeland” and urged security forces to take strong action to ensure the safety of citizens.

According to Syrian authorities, the explosive device was hidden within the cafe and subsequently detonated, contradicting social media claims of a suicide bombing. Despite assurances from officials to uncover the culprits behind the act, updates on the investigation remain sparse, and no group has claimed responsibility for the bombing thus far.

The attack has elicited widespread condemnation, with regional governments from Turkiye, Iraq, Egypt, Qatar, and Jordan expressing solidarity with Syria and reiterating their collective rejection of terrorism. The European Union also condemned the bombing as a “terrorist attack,” extending condolences to the victims and their families.

This tragic incident reflects one of the most significant security lapses in Damascus since the establishment of the new government following the transition of power in December 2024. Recent months have seen a series of security challenges, including a car bomb explosion outside the Ministry of Defence that led to both fatalities and injuries, further illustrating the ongoing security concerns plaguing the region.
