The ongoing situation in Gaza has profoundly affected its population, which has reportedly decreased by approximately 160,000 residents since the onset of hostilities nearly 15 months ago, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS). The decline represents a 6 percent decrease in the area’s population, which stood at about 2.1 million prior to the conflict.
The report indicates that around 100,000 Palestinians have fled the enclave while more than 55,000 are unaccounted for, a rough estimate of those who may have lost their lives during this tumultuous period. Children are especially affected, as they comprise nearly half of the remaining population, with many facing severe food insecurity. Presently, roughly 22 percent of Gaza residents endure critical levels of acute food scarcity, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification.
Compounding these challenges, the healthcare infrastructure has been severely compromised, posing grave risks to pregnant women and infants. Estimates indicate that approximately 60,000 pregnant women are experiencing significant health threats due to limited access to medical care amid the conflict. Tragically, the report noted that several infants have succumbed to precarious living conditions, which have deteriorated further with declining temperatures.
In contrast to these figures, Israel’s foreign ministry has dismissed the PCBS data as exaggerated and claims that its military operations are necessary to combat threats from Hamas. Despite accusations from international human rights organizations alleging acts of genocide against Palestinians, Israel maintains its position of adhering to international law and justifying its actions as self-defense.
Furthermore, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has previously ruled that Israel holds an obligation to prevent acts of genocide against Palestinians, a concern echoed by Pope Francis, who has urged the global community to scrutinize the situation closely. It is essential for the international community to remain engaged and advocate for the restoration of humanitarian access to Gaza, ensuring that basic rights and needs are met amid the ongoing conflict.
