In a significant move that highlights Pakistan’s diplomatic influence in the region, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has embarked on a state visit to Islamabad, marking his first international journey since a series of military strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel. This visit not only underscores the strengthening ties between Iran and Pakistan but also follows a pivotal moment of dialogue aimed at resolving ongoing tensions in the Middle East, signaling a potential thaw in relations and a new chapter for cooperation in various sectors.

Islamabad, Pakistan – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Pakistan for a state visit, marking a diplomatic milestone as it is his first overseas trip since the United States and Israel launched military strikes on Iran on February 28. Welcoming him at a military base near the capital, Islamabad, were his Pakistani counterparts, President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

Throughout the day-long visit, Pezeshkian, accompanied by a high-level delegation of ministers and senior officials, is scheduled to engage in discussions with Sharif, as well as meet with Zardari. In addition to these key figures, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani and National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq are also expected to confer with the Iranian leader, emphasizing the importance of the diplomatic exchanges taking place.

According to a statement from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two nations will review the full spectrum of their bilateral relations as part of the agenda, exploring areas to enhance cooperation across diverse sectors, including trade, energy, border security, people-to-people exchanges, and regional connectivity.

Pezeshkian’s visit comes on the heels of crucial negotiations mediated by Pakistan and Qatar between the United States and Iran held in Bürgenstock, Switzerland. These discussions resulted in a significant agreement, wherein the U.S. pledged to release billion in frozen Iranian assets and announced a temporary easing of international sanctions, permitting Iran to resume oil and petrochemical sales until August 21. The dialogue culminated in a 60-day roadmap intended to lead to a final accord.

This marks Pezeshkian’s second visit to Pakistan as president, following his inaugural trip in August 2025, which occurred shortly after a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel. His current visit is widely perceived as a gesture of appreciation for Pakistan’s instrumental role in brokering the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, signed on June 18 by U.S. President Donald Trump and Pezeshkian, with Prime Minister Sharif facilitating as a mediator.

The Islamabad MoU has formally initiated the ongoing diplomatic processes now taking place in Switzerland. Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that this visit represents a critical juncture to further discuss diplomatic engagements following the signing of the MoU, as well as ongoing regional and international developments of mutual interest.
