In a statement made to Azerbaijani state television, President Aliyev asserted, “We can say with complete clarity that the plane was shot down by Russia.” He clarified that while the incident was not believed to be intentional, the consequences were grave. According to Aliyev, the aircraft was struck by ground fire over Russian territory, exacerbated by electronic warfare tactics that forced the plane off its intended course before its eventual emergency landing attempt resulted in a crash. He noted, “Unfortunately, for the first three days, we heard nothing from Russia except delirious versions,” indicating a need for transparency and accountability.
The situation took another turn when Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed regret over the incident and stated that the confusion arose from engagement with Ukrainian drones in the same airspace. However, a formal acknowledgment of having shot down the civilian aircraft was notably absent from Kremlin communications, which instead referenced the opening of a criminal investigation.
Adding to the discourse, a Kazakh aviation safety expert criticized the assertion that a bird strike could have caused such destruction, calling it “absurd and criminal.” This further fueled the notion that a thorough explanation is essential for the affected families and the Azerbaijani government.
