As the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) prepares for their long-awaited participation in the World Cup, their journey has been marked by resilience and adaptation amid challenges beyond their control. Arriving in the United States after a mandatory quarantine due to an Ebola outbreak, the squad is determined to uplift the spirits of their nation through the universal language of football. With their sights set on making their mark, the DRC team aims to inspire hope among their supporters during a difficult time.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) national squad has finally touched down in the United States in anticipation of their participation in the World Cup, embarking on this journey after enduring a three-week quarantine in Europe due to an Ebola outbreak at home. The team arrived on a flight from Paris on Thursday, having complied with U.S. health regulations which mandated that they complete their isolation period in Belgium to ensure public health safety during the tournament.

Head coach Sebastien Desabre expressed his hopes for a strong performance from his squad, highlighting that their participation serves as a source of joy for their beleaguered compatriots coping with the challenges posed by the viral outbreak. Desabre stated, “It has been a while since the people have seen the team at the World Cup,” emphasizing the significance of their return to the international stage after an absence since their last appearance in 1974.

The DRC team had to cancel their planned pre-World Cup training camp at home due to the outbreak, instead opting for a training base in Belgium. Their World Cup preparations faced additional disruptions as a warm-up match against Chile in Spain was called off amid concerns regarding the virus’s spread.

Despite these challenges, Coach Desabre remains optimistic, stating, “We adapted to the situation. We had to focus, as we have had to adapt often.” With an unwavering spirit, the team managed to play two hard-fought friendlies during their preparation period, preparing themselves for the competitive challenges ahead.

As the DRC gears up for their first Group K match against Portugal on June 17, they will be based in Houston, Texas. Following their encounter with Portugal, the team is scheduled to head to Guadalajara, Mexico, to face Colombia on June 23, and then to Atlanta for a match against Uzbekistan on June 28. With the football world watching, the DRC aims not only to compete but to inspire and unite their supporters through the power of sport.
