In a remarkable twist of fate that underscores the unpredictability of high-altitude expeditions, Dawa Sherpa, a seasoned Nepali guide, was found alive on Mount Everest after his family had begun funeral rites for him. His harrowing journey from despair to survival not only highlights the resilience of the human spirit but also emphasizes the crucial role of search and rescue operations in ensuring the safety of climbers in one of the world’s most challenging environments.
A Nepali Sherpa guide, Dawa Sherpa, has been located alive after going missing on Mount Everest for six days, leading to a dramatic turn of events for his family. Initially feared dead, Dawa was found crawling towards base camp, prompting a swift response from rescue teams who had been coordinating efforts to locate him.
Dawa Sherpa, 52, was discovered by a clearing crew on Thursday morning while traversing the treacherous snowy slopes near the Khumbu Icefall, using sheer determination to make his way back to safety. Pemba Sherpa from 8K Expeditions, which coordinated the search, confirmed that Dawa was carried down, provided with food and water, and subsequently airlifted to HAMS Hospital in Kathmandu. His wife, Damu Sherpa, and teenage daughter, Mendo Lhamu, were anxiously waiting at the hospital, having already commenced funeral rituals for him.
“When we first received the news of his survival through local media and a personal contact, we were overwhelmed with disbelief,” Damu explained. Despite having completed the ascent, Dawa’s client, a Polish climber, had descended successfully while Dawa had not reached the intended base camp.
Complications arose in the rescue effort due to delays in organizing a search team, which left them unable to deploy helicopters until days later. These challenges highlight the dramatic difficulties faced by rescue operations in the Everest region, especially amid an unprecedented season where over 1,000 climbers attempted to scale the mountain, resulting in at least five fatalities.
For Dawa’s family, hope had nearly evaporated as they engaged in the second day of their funeral rituals. Mendo shared their elation upon receiving confirmation of her father’s survival: “We were naturally anxious to confirm his identity and sought photos before feeling entirely assured.”
The diligent team that eventually located Dawa was part of the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee. Their mission is not only to set up vital climbing supports like ladders and ropes at the beginning of the season but also to ensure the environmental cleanliness of the mountain post-climbing.
This season’s activity has proven to be one of the busiest in Everest history, reminding us of both the allure and dangers of mountaineering. Dawa Sherpa’s story resonates as a testament to resilience, igniting hope amidst the harsh realities of the world’s tallest peak.
