Swiss Commentator Criticizes Israeli Bobsleigh Team, Labels Them as ‘Zionist’ During Winter Olympics

The recent uproar surrounding a Swiss sports commentator’s remarks during the Israeli team’s bobsleigh event at the 2026 Winter Olympics sheds light on the complex interplay of sports, politics, and social responsibility within international competitions. As public discussions increasingly intertwine with athletes’ political stances, Stefan Reina’s commentary has ignited both commendation and controversy, revealing the polarizing nature of political expressions in sports settings.

A Swiss sports journalist has sparked significant debate over his candid remarks during the Israeli team’s bobsleigh run at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Stefan Reina, a commentator for Radio Television Suisse (RTS), came under scrutiny for labeling Israeli pilot Adam Jeremy Edelman as “a Zionist to the core” as the team appeared on the screen at the Milano Cortina Games on Monday.

Reina’s commentary followed shortly after Edelman began his competition, referencing the athlete’s social media activity that aligns with the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He stated, “Adam Edelman is an Israeli athlete and a Zionist to the core, as he describes himself,” adding that Edelman had previously expressed support for actions in Gaza, which Reina termed “genocide.”

This term, utilized by the United Nations Commission of Inquiry, aimed to underscore the severity of the situation, prompting Reina to question why the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed Edelman to participate, despite its policies advocating the exclusion of athletes with military affiliations or supportive social media posts during wartime. His comments suggested a double standard, particularly in the wake of the IOC’s decisions regarding Russian athletes following the invasion of Ukraine.

Reina noted that Edelman had encouraged his followers to support fellow Israeli athlete Ward Fawarsa while he was engaged in military operations in Gaza in 2023. Notably, the Israeli bobsleigh team finished in last place among the 26 competing teams.

Reflecting the polarizing impact of his words, footage of Reina’s remarks quickly circulated on social media, prompting RTS to remove it from their YouTube channel the following day. The media outlet confirmed that the commentary was part of their Olympic coverage but emphasized that while it raised important questions, its length rendered it unsuitable for sports commentary.

In the aftermath, Reina received praise from numerous sports enthusiasts and Palestinian advocates who applauded his bravery in addressing the political dimensions surrounding the Olympic event. However, he also faced backlash from notable figures, including U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who accused him of anti-Semitism and inciting hatred. The organization StopAntisemitism, a prominent part of the U.S. Zionist lobby, also called for Reina’s termination, claiming he insulted the Israeli team.

In response, Edelman took to social media to refute Reina’s claims, stressing the pride and determination of his team—six Israelis pursuing their Olympic dreams without extensive training resources. He expressed disbelief at Reina’s perspective, asserting the essence of their journey showcases the resilience of the Israeli spirit.

While the IOC has remained silent on the controversy, a spokesperson reminded everyone involved in the Olympic Games of its charter promoting unity among diverse nations, while suggestively depoliticizing specific commentary as a broadcaster’s concern rather than an Olympic issue.

This incident not only highlights the intricate relationship between sports and socio-political narratives but also emphasizes the ongoing challenges faced by athletes in a world where their public personas are often entwined with broader geopolitical debates.
