In addition to addressing drug-related issues, the aid package allocates million for border stabilization efforts to assist those displaced by recent conflicts, as well as million for demining and the clearance of unexploded ordnance. “The United States will continue to support the Cambodian and Thai governments as they implement the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords and strive for a return to peace, prosperity, and stability for their people and the region,” DeSombre stated.
The peace agreement, signed during a visit by former President Donald Trump to Malaysia, aims to resolve ongoing border clashes, which escalated last month after a previous truce fell apart in July. The two nations reached another ceasefire on December 27, which halted 20 days of fighting that resulted in over 101 fatalities and displaced more than half a million people.
Although Thailand initially accused Cambodia of violating the ceasefire, this claim was later recanted as the Thai military reported that the alleged violation was merely an accidental firing incident. In response, Cambodia has urged Thailand to withdraw its troops from disputed border areas.
