Israeli military actions in southern Lebanon have intensified, resulting in the deaths of at least five medics and significant destruction, including the collapse of a multistory building. The recent airstrikes targeted the southern suburbs of Beirut, where Israeli warplanes struck two buildings on a typically bustling street, triggering a fire that ultimately led to the building’s implosion and scattering debris across the area.
According to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA), a warning issued by Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee prompted evacuations in nearby neighborhoods, as the military announced anticipated strikes against Hezbollah positions in the Chiyah area, along with warnings extending to Haret Hreik and Ghobeiry. Reports indicate that earlier strikes in southern Beirut produced visible smoke in the vicinity of the Lebanese University in Hadath.
On the ground, Israeli troops reportedly entered the village of Deir Mimas, which lies approximately 2.5 kilometers from the border. In the absence of most residents, reconnaissance aircraft were detected, further highlighting the urgency of the situation. During this escalation, Hezbollah forces claimed they retaliated by targeting Israeli troops using rockets and artillery.
The Israeli military has made efforts to establish control in multiple border regions, particularly in the town of Khiam, where Hezbollah claimed to have engaged their forces several times. Additionally, Israeli fighter jets executed a series of strikes against claimed Hezbollah sites in Tyre, encompassing military infrastructure such as weapons depots and command centers.
Regrettably, the violence has taken a toll on healthcare workers. The Ministry of Public Health reported the tragic deaths of at least five medics affiliated with the Islamic Health Organization, describing these fatalities as unacceptable and a violation of international standards, urging accountability for these actions.
Despite recent diplomatic efforts by US envoy Amos Hochstein aiming for a ceasefire, the conflict shows no sign of abating. As frontline tensions mount, Israeli assaults have broadened, impacting civilian areas and complicating humanitarian efforts.
Additionally, amid these hostilities, UN peacekeepers have also faced danger. In a recent incident, four Italian soldiers stationed with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon were injured following a rocket strike on their facility, drawing condemnation from Italian authorities who called for greater protection for peacekeeping personnel.
The ongoing conflict has claimed over 3,580 lives and injured more than 15,000 in Lebanon since the onset of intensified military campaigns. This escalating situation underscores the urgent need for a renewed international dialogue aimed at fostering peace and stability in the region.
