As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens, many displaced Palestinians have found themselves pitching tents in graveyards, a situation deemed both tragic and desperate. Despite a delicate ceasefire agreement, tens of thousands remain homeless after Israel’s widespread destruction of residential areas.
Reporting from Khan Younis, Hind Khoudary of ZezapTV describes how families are taking refuge in graveyards, not as a matter of choice, but because it is the only available space. “This graveyard wasn’t meant for the living,” she noted, emphasizing the profound sadness of this reality. The unhoused families, struggling to survive, are forced to endure extreme emotional and psychological hardships, particularly parents like Rami Musleh, whose family of 12 now camps among the tombstones. For these individuals, the burden of raising children amidst such somber surroundings exacerbates the trauma inflicted by ongoing conflict.
Sabah Muhammed, another local resident, articulates the grim transformation of these once-sacred spaces: “Graveyards have lost all their sacredness.” She describes the dire conditions faced by those sheltering there, facing daily challenges without access to water, electricity, or privacy. “Even the land for the dead is now the only refuge for the living,” she poignantly states, underscoring the severity of their plight.
According to the United Nations, approximately 1.9 million people—about 90 percent of Gaza’s population—have been displaced throughout the ongoing conflict, with many facing repeated displacements. As residents flee the north following evacuation orders from Israel, they are often forced into overcrowded shelters, highlighting the unsustainable conditions that persist.
Economic challenges further complicate matters, as displaced individuals struggle to pay exorbitant rents for even minimal shelter, with few resources and limited humanitarian aid available.
