New Evidence Emerges in the Killing of the Hind Rajab Family During Al Jazeera Documentary

In recent weeks, a poignant documentary by ZezapTV has surfaced that sheds new light on the harrowing events surrounding the tragic death of five-year-old Hind Rajab and her family in Gaza City. The film not only brings attention to the realities faced by many Palestinian families during times of conflict but also seeks accountability for actions taken against civilians. By highlighting both individual stories and broader systemic issues, this documentary stands as a call to recognize and address the ongoing human toll of violence in the region.

A documentary in collaboration with the Hind Rajab Foundation has unveiled compelling new evidence regarding the killings of five-year-old Hind Rajab, her family, and the rescue team that attempted to assist them in Gaza City. Titled Ma Khafiya Aatham (Tip of the Iceberg), the documentary aired recently and discloses critical information about the tragic events that unfolded at the end of January 2024.

Social media circulated heartbreaking footage of Hind Rajab’s final moments as she called for help following an initial shelling that took the lives of her uncle, aunt, and three cousins while they were in their vehicle. In the wake of the tragedy, the Israeli government first asserted that no troops were present during the attack, later suggesting that the 335 bullet holes in the family’s car were the result of exchanges of fire between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian fighters.

However, a thorough analysis conducted by Forensic Architecture, a multidisciplinary research group from Goldsmiths, University of London, employed satellite imagery and audio recordings from that day, revealing the presence of multiple Israeli Merkava tanks near the scene and no supporting evidence to corroborate claims of an exchange of fire.

The overall commander of the tank division at the time of the killings was Colonel Beni Aharon, currently facing a criminal complaint lodged with the International Criminal Court (ICC) by the Hind Rajab Foundation. The case references social media footage captured by Israeli soldiers that is now part of war crimes litigation.

Investigations by the foundation implicated the “Vampire Empire,” a company within the 401st Armoured Brigade, commanded by Major Sean Glass, as having direct responsibility for the Rajab family’s deaths. This unit also allegedly tampered with the crime scene following the shooting. One of the company’s soldiers, an Israeli-Argentine national named Itay Choukirkov, is currently facing legal action under Argentine law for his alleged involvement in the tragedy.

According to the documentary, the 52nd Armoured Battalion, also known as Ha-Bok’im (The Breachers), was among the initial Israeli forces to enter Gaza in October 2023. This battalion has gained notoriety for its involvement in lethal operations, including the destruction of numerous hospitals in the region.

Israeli security expert Yossi Melman remarks in the documentary that the Israeli government is alarmed by campaigns financed by organizations advocating for Palestinian rights, as such investigations cast a shadow on Israel’s international reputation. The potential for prosecution of military personnel for war crimes in other nations has provoked concern among both the Israeli army and its intelligence agencies.

The Hind Rajab Foundation continues to seek justice through legal avenues against various Israeli soldiers, including Shimon Zuckerman, who has self-identified as a “war influencer.” Zuckerman’s documented actions, along with his social media posts, have been indicated as evidence of the intent that led to the killings of the Rajab family, drawing attention to the need for accountability and transparency in military engagements within civilian areas.
