Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom is leading a significant trade mission to India, featuring a diverse delegation comprised of prominent British business leaders, entrepreneurs, and university vice-chancellors. This visit, hailed as Britain’s largest trade mission to India to date, aims to “turbocharge” the relationship between the two nations, representing the world’s fifth and sixth largest economies.

Beginning in Mumbai, the two-day initiative arrives amid a shifting global trade landscape, particularly following the imposition of tariffs by the United States during the previous administration. In August, the US enacted a 50% tariff on Indian goods, impacting trade dynamics significantly, especially concerning India’s oil trade with Russia. In contrast, the UK recently secured a trade agreement with Washington but has faced lower tariff rates in comparison.

Starmer emphasized the trip as a means to capitalize on a landmark trade agreement finalized between the UK and India earlier this year, stating that the partnership should be seen as a “launchpad for growth” rather than merely a contract. With projections suggesting India could emerge as the third-largest economy globally by 2028, the Prime Minister identified unparalleled opportunities for both nations in boosting trade cooperation.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet Starmer, expressing optimism about enhancing their shared vision for a robust, prosperous future. The existing trade relationship is valued at approximately .8 billion, generating over 600,000 jobs across both countries.

Under the auspices of the new agreement, India has committed to reducing tariffs on key British exports such as whisky, cosmetics, and medical devices, while the UK will lower duties on Indian exports, including clothing and seafood. The UK government projects that this trade deal could boost its GDP by £4.8 billion (.4 billion) annually, along with a projected 60% increase in UK exports to India.

Starmer noted that emerging opportunities are already materializing, with increasing trade activity linked to the deal. During his visit to the iconic Yash Raj Film Studio, he announced three Bollywood films will be produced in the UK starting next year, reinforcing the relevance of British infrastructure in global filmmaking.

Additionally, Starmer engaged with young Indian footballers and coaches through an English Premier League community initiative, illustrating the widespread popularity of British sports culture in India. The delegation also includes leaders from major corporations such as British Airways and BP, alongside vice-chancellors from 14 esteemed British universities, reinforcing the commitment to fostering a vibrant educational and economic exchange.
