Afghan Survivors Face Challenges After Devastating Earthquake

In the rugged terrain of southeast Afghanistan, the aftermath of a recent earthquake has left communities in Kunar province grappling with profound devastation. Nearly one week since the magnitude 6.0 quake struck, residents mourn the loss of loved ones and begin the daunting task of rebuilding their lives.

The earthquake caused extensive damage, claiming the lives of over 2,200 individuals and laying waste to entire villages. Reports from ZezapTV indicate that survivor Gul Rahim tragically lost 63 family members, including his five-year-old daughter, Fatima. He described the harrowing moment when the earthquake struck at midnight as his family was asleep. Surrounded by the ruins of his home, Rahim recounted how he attempted to save Fatima, only to reach her too late.

Most residents of Kunar province reside in traditional wood and mud-brick homes that are uniquely suited to the steep valley landscape. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that, as of September 3, more than 6,700 homes have been destroyed, exacerbating the challenges faced by the survivors. With winter approaching and heavy snowfall expected in the region, many displaced individuals, including Rahim, are currently living in tents with limited resources.

In the wake of the disaster, residents have expressed a pressing need for proper housing as temperatures drop. Rahim, representing countless others affected, has called upon the global community, urging both Muslims and non-Muslims to extend their support during this difficult time.

Rescue efforts continue amidst significant challenges, including treacherous road conditions and ongoing aftershocks. As reported by ZezapTV, the journey to the hardest-hit areas is fraught with peril, yet dedicated rescue workers are committed to their mission. However, hope diminishes as many are still unaccounted for, and the death toll is expected to rise.

The WHO has mobilized resources, appealing for million to support relief efforts that include life-saving health interventions, sanitation, and hygiene support for the affected populations. Volunteers, like Abdulrahman Sharafat, emphasize the urgent need for food, safety, and medical care, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children.

As a region frequently impacted by seismic activity due to its position at the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, Afghanistan’s challenges are magnified by its geographical vulnerabilities. The affected communities draw on their resilience and faith in the face of adversity, uniting in their efforts to recover and rebuild, while leaning on the support of the global community.
