Typhoon Kajiki has significantly impacted Vietnam, with authorities reporting a death toll of three and at least 13 injuries as the storm’s aftermath continues to unfold. Rescue operations are currently underway as workers contend with the challenges posed by uprooted trees and downed power lines, while flooding has disrupted daily life in the capital city of Hanoi.
Striking central Vietnam on Monday, Typhoon Kajiki brought with it winds reaching up to 130 kilometers per hour (approximately 80 miles per hour). The force of the storm led to widespread destruction, as thousands of homes lost their roofs and more than 1.6 million residents experienced power outages.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, officials confirmed the fatalities and ongoing injuries, in addition to issuing warnings regarding potential flash floods and landslides affecting eight provinces in the region. The relentless rains associated with Kajiki have continued to pose a risk in many areas.
Vietnam has long been accustomed to seasonal typhoons; however, the rising tides of climate change, evidenced by increasingly severe weather conditions, have complicated this reality. Recent flooding has left 27 villages isolated in mountainous regions, and in anticipation of the storm, authorities evacuated over 44,000 residents to ensure their safety.
In Hanoi, torrential rains have rendered many streets impassable, leading to considerable disruptions in traffic. The situation remains fluid as the storm has weakened into a tropical depression but has continued to unleash intense rain in northern Laos after making its way westward.
Data from Vietnam’s agriculture ministry indicates that natural disasters have claimed over 100 lives or left many missing within the first seven months of 2025 alone. Historical patterns reveal that Typhoon Yagi, which struck in September of the previous year, similarly wreaked havoc in northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar, resulting in over 700 fatalities and incurring substantial economic damage.
As communities rally to support one another during this challenging time, efforts are focused not only on immediate relief but also on long-term resilience against the growing threat of climate-related disasters.
