Sri Lanka Parliament Approves Dismissal of Impeached Police Chief

Sri Lanka’s Parliament has made a historic decision, voting to dismiss the country’s police chief, Deshabandu Tennakoon, amid serious allegations of misconduct and abuse of power. This marks the first impeachment of an inspector general in the nation’s history. The decision was reached with unanimous support from lawmakers, reflecting a broad consensus on the issue of accountability within law enforcement.

The impeachment was precipitated by findings from a parliamentary-appointed committee that investigated Tennakoon following a controversial incident in Weligama in 2023. During this incident, a poorly executed raid involving armed officers resulted in a grave confrontation with another police unit, culminating in the tragic death of an officer. This event raised significant concerns about the operational integrity of the police force under Tennakoon’s leadership.

In response to the allegations, the committee’s report documented 19 counts of misconduct against Tennakoon. Specifically, it charged him with orchestrating what was described as a misguided and unlawful engagement with the local hotel, W15, where he reportedly sent his officers to intimidate the owner. The inquiry revealed not only serious operational failings but also suggested the possibility of systemic issues within the police force. A state prosecutor informed the committee that Tennakoon, responsible for overseeing approximately 85,000 officers, was allegedly engaging in behaviors that could be characterized as operating a “criminal network,” raising significant questions about his capacity to lead.

Deshabandu Tennakoon has not publicly responded to the impeachment process initiated last month. His appointment as police chief in 2023 under then-President Ranil Wickremesinghe had already stirred controversy, with many lawmakers and civil rights advocates expressing doubts about his suitability for the role due to previous allegations of torture related to his past conduct while in office.

This dismissal of the police chief is seen as a pivotal moment for Sri Lanka, emphasizing the commitment of lawmakers to uphold justice and accountability in law enforcement. As the country moves forward, the implications of this decision may influence the future direction of policing in Sri Lanka, promoting a more transparent and responsible approach to governance.
