Before turmoil unfolded, I reveled in what I considered the happiest days of my life, surrounded by the warmth of family, the affection of friends, and aspirations that seemed tangible. Throughout 2023, I poured my energy into preparing for graduation from the Islamic University in Gaza, eagerly transitioning from theoretical study to practical experience in various eye hospitals across the Gaza Strip.
On October 6, as I organized my books, tools, and white coat for a lengthy training day at Al-Nasr Eye Hospital, I felt a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation. However, I had no inkling that this night would become a harbinger of an abrupt and calamitous shift in my life. At 6 AM the following day, instead of waking to the quotidian chirp of my alarm, I was jolted awake by the cacophony of rockets. I opened my eyes, grappling with disbelief as the reality of war settled in—it transformed our once-vibrant lives into a continuous nightmare.
The devastation became more palpable on October 8 when I received the heart-wrenching news that my university had been leveled. The laboratories and classrooms where I had honed my craft, including the graduation hall where I envisioned celebrating my accomplishments, had been reduced to rubble. A profound sense of loss enveloped me, as if a vital part of my being had crumbled.
By December 27, the aggressive hostilities intensified, compelling my family and me to vacate our home and seek refuge in designated humanitarian zones in Rafah. In the chaos, we found ourselves stored in makeshift tents, which stood as our only sanctuary during this harrowing period.
Despite the upheaval, I clung to the knowledge and experience I had gained in eye care. I noticed many, particularly children and women, suffering from relentless eye infections due to smoke exposure and unsanitary conditions. Empathizing deeply with their plight, I resolved to take action. I wanted to be a conduit for healing, helping to restore the light in their eyes.
In December 2024, I began volunteering at Al-Razi Health Center, working in the eye clinic under a dedicated and compassionate physician. Initially, I felt apprehensive, as the war had eroded my confidence. However, reassurances from my supervisor rejuvenated my spirit, reinforcing my role as an agent of healing.
Patients began arriving from all corners of Gaza, overwhelming our clinic’s existing resources. Yet, we strived to provide the best care possible. Among the harrowing cases I encountered was a four-year-old girl, her vision lost to severe corneal burns from an explosion, as well as a man in his thirties who suffered life-altering injuries after being struck by shrapnel. Each story illustrated the profound impact of the conflict on our community.
Current challenges include dealing with severe shortages of essential medical supplies. We often had to prescribe alternatives without complete knowledge of their side effects. In these moments of extreme pressure, I felt my own limits tested; however, I persevered, driven by an unwavering desire to help.
The brief announcement of a ceasefire in January 2025 offered a momentary respite, allowing the university to resume sessions at the European Hospital. Despite the hazardous conditions, my commitment never wavered. I continued to navigate the tumultuous landscape, reaching out to those in need, listening to their stories, and striving to deliver healing.
Though the road remains fraught with uncertainty, I persist in my mission to bring hope and light back into people’s lives. My journey, marked by resilience and compassion, reinforces my dedication to healing, underscoring the unshakeable belief that we will emerge from this darkness together, illuminated by the human spirit.
