Twelve Turkish soldiers tragically lost their lives due to methane gas exposure during a military operation in northern Iraq, as reported by the Turkish Ministry of National Defence. The incident occurred on Sunday while the soldiers were on a mission to recover the remains of a comrade slain by fighters associated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in 2022.
In an official statement shared on the social media platform X, the ministry noted that the count of casualties had risen to twelve following the news that four additional soldiers succumbed to the effects of the gas. This unfortunate incident took place as the soldiers were conducting a search operation inside a cave previously used as a makeshift hospital by armed groups.
According to the Ministry, a total of nineteen soldiers were affected by the methane gas, and the immediate condition of the remaining seven has not been disclosed. Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya expressed his heartfelt wishes for a rapid recovery for the affected soldiers, affirming the nation’s support for their bravery.
The operation was part of Turkey’s ongoing military strategy, known as Operation Claw-Lock, which focuses on neutralizing PKK positions in northern Iraq.
